Spaces are still available in the SOLINET Preservation book repair class
"Basic Collections Care", to be held August 25th in Brentwood,
Tennessee. Any institution in the state of Tennessee qualifies for the
member rate for this class, thanks to a grant from the National
Endowment for the Humanities, Division of Preservation and Access.
Students of Library programs may attend at half price.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Some of the repairs taught in this one-day class are
*not* appropriate for academic collections. Staff members of academic
or special libraries are invited to take our two-day book repair course,
"Fundamentals of Book Repair", offered in September at the Tennessee
State Library and Archives (http://tinyurl.com/9es9w). Participants of
"Fundamentals of Book Repair" may be admitted to our "Intermediate Book
Repair" course (http://tinyurl.com/al25m). Those who take just "Basic
Collections Care" may not attend "Intermediate Book Repair", due to the
extra day of class work in "Fundamentals". Any librarian may attend
"Fundamentals of Book Repair", which is an intensive two-day course.
"Basic Collections Care" is a one-day class that was developed to
respond to the needs of public librarians and school media specialists
who need to get a few more circulations out of their most popular books
with as few special supplies as possible.
****BASIC COLLECTIONS CARE****
http://tinyurl.com/dha5f
Public library and school media center circulating collections are
subjected to a lot of wear and tear. Most libraries perform some minor
repair on their damaged materials. Despite the good intentions of staff
members, some materials and procedures used can shorten the useful life
of the book, make it hard to open, and cause more problems later. If
done properly, however, book repairs are an effective way to keep
materials available to patrons for a longer period.
This one-day workshop will teach staff how to minimize damage to
collections by learning proper use, handling and storage of collections.
Also covered are simple, economical repairs on materials in general
circulating and reference collections. The session will focus on
techniques that are most often needed in public libraries and school
media center and do not require expensive equipment and supplies. The
workshop will NOT teach techniques for repairing materials that are
special, rare, or archival. The following procedures will be taught in
small-group modules through demonstrations and practice:
*Tightening hinges when text blocks are pulling away from the cover
*Replacing torn endsheets
*Replacing torn or damaged spines in general circulating collections
*Mending paper for disposable circulating items
*Tipping and pages into bound volumes
The workshop will provide context for the repair work. Lectures and
discussion will address preservation principles, preventative measures,
treatment decision-making and organizing equipping a repair unit.
Location and Time: Thursday, August 25th, 9am to 4pm, at the Brentwood
Public Library in Brentwood, TN.

half price. Please choose the "member rate" or "student rate" options
when registering online to ensure proper billing.
