Title: Conservator position

Conservator Position at Heckman Bindery

Summary
Responsible for the daily operations of all Conservation functions.  These functions include the repair and restoration of rare or unique volumes, construction of protective enclosures, pocket construction, pamphlet binding, deacidification and encapsulation.  Consults regularly with the Conservation Services Manager and the Director of Preservation Services in planning, staffing, evaluating, organizing, motivating, directing and controlling manufacturing functions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Monitor delivery and fulfillment of customer orders, managing quality, completeness and costs to comply with minimum requirements set by budget and upper management.  Provide oversight to the continuing effort to preserve materials for future use.  Assess materials for repair and determine appropriate treatment needs for the restoration of damaged materials.  Make recommendations to customer service staff.  Organize workflow of projects.  Assist in reviewing and hiring new associates to meet staffing needs.  Provide the Conservation Services Manager with recommendations concerning the job performance of associates.   Manage staff to ensure compliance to company policies, practices, and rules, including LEAN-manufacturing goals, and the AIC Code of Ethics.  Continually evaluate all production processes in the department looking for continuous method improvements.  Develop and maintain training procedures to ensure that all associates are given the necessary tools to accurately and efficiently complete tasks.  Ensure that all equipment within the department is functioning correctly.  Manage and maintain material inventories and supplies at adequate levels for use while keeping waste and scrap to a minimum.  Have a commitment to continual training by attending professional conferences and remaining up to date on treatment developments practices in the field of library conservation.  Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability needed as a minimum for entry level.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  The ability to interpret customer expectations and communicate these expectations to production.  Previous library experience; knowledge of bookbinding and preservation technologies and practices; ability to set priorities, organize work and meet deadlines; supervisory experience.

Other Skills and Abilities

Excellent interpersonal skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills.  Computer knowledge.  Must have excellent organizational and leadership skills and be capable of functioning with moderate supervision.  Must be knowledgeable of conservation practices and operate within the guidelines outlined in procedure manuals and documentation.

Education and/or Experience

Formal conservation training and college education are preferred.
