Gary -- it is SO wonderful to hear from you! Thank you dearly for your
input. I found the RUSA document, and am also finding most do not have their own
specific policies (written!) for damage to ILL materials.
I love Albany. How is UMassAmherst treating you these
days???

Karen, I asked our ILL
Librarian about what we do for damage to ILL books in our care. Her
response below: Hi Gary - We don't have a
written policy - We refer to the National ILL code. In practice when one
of our patrons damages a book from another library we will ask that library what
they would like us to do to compensate them. Sometimes this will involve
purchasing another copy on their behalf or paying a
bill. Depending on the severity of
the damage we will also bill the patron. The National ILL code states
that the borrowing library is responsible for the lent material as soon as it
leaves the other library (see http://www.ala.org/ala/rusa/rusaprotools/referenceguide/interlibrary.htm section 4.9
) hope this helps -
