Care and Preservation of Photography Collections

Presenter:	Gary E. Albright, Conservator and Guest Professor,
		Photograph Conservation, Buffalo State University &
		University of Delaware

The agendas and times (9a.m.to 4 p.m.)for these free workshops will be the
same at each location. Lunch is NOT provided.

The workshop will be a mix of slide lectures, hands-on examination of
photographs, and interactive lectures.  The one-day workshop will cover the
following material:

* A short history of photography from 1839-present. This provides a context
for photographic processes and introduces the participants to photographic
terms and dates.

* A description of photographic deterioration.  How do photographs
deteriorate and why.

* Identification of the most commonly encountered photographic processes.
Participants will be able to examine a collection of labeled processes and
be guided by the instructor as they practice identification on a small group
of unidentified images.

* Preservation of photographs.  What steps should be taken to preserve
photographic collections.   This includes appropriate aspects of
environment, handling, proper storage, and exhibition.  The special needs of
specific processes will also be addressed.

* Conservation treatment.  What to expect when an object is taken to a
conservator for professional treatment.
