[PADG:1883] RE: Rolled wall maps

class=250352117-02012003>dowel. I cannot think of a time when we did not
remove the dowel.  We've never judged
them to have any sort of artifactual value.  In addition, when these maps
come in, it's usually for conservation treatment, and the dowels need to be
removed for treatments like washing, backing, etc.  Even if we weren't
treating them in the lab, I would think there would be a high risk of the dowels
causing mechanical damage to adjacent items in a
drawer.

the eye of the beholder, so others may have a different view of this
matter.

mapsOur map department has a collection of old
"pull-down" wall maps attached to wooden dowels. These maps, which were
originally used in the classroom, are rarely if ever used by a patron outside
of the department. Our maps librarian is wondering if  it would be sound
practice to remove the maps from the dowels in order to store them flat (which
is more efficient).  I am wondering how other institutions have
handled their collection of rolled wall maps.  Any input or advice would
be most appreciated. Please feel free to reply directly to me off-line if you
  prefer.Thanks,and Happy New Year,Kristin
