DIRTY BOOKS: STACKS CLEANING IN LIBRARIES

Housekeeping in the stacks of general collections is an important but
daunting management task. A clean and orderly environment creates a
positive impression with library users, has a significant influence on
health, and helps preserve collections.  A panel of speakers will
describe how to define and implement cleaning projects, using in-house
or contract staff, for small and large collections.  Topics include:

"Surveying Stacks Conditions"
Janet Gertz, Director for Preservation, Columbia University Libraries
Describes methodology for carrying out a random sample survey of
conditions in the stacks.

"Disaster Cleanups"
Tom McGuire, National Catastrophe Manager/Document Recovery Manager,
Munters Moisture Control
Provides background on causes and treatments for cleaning after
disasters.

"It Can Be Done: The UC-San Diego In-house Training Program"
Julie Page, Preservation Librarian, University of California at San
Diego
Integrating a stacks cleaning program into your ongoing shelving and
stacks maintenance operations is an effective approach for preservation
of library collections.

"When the Job is Too Big to Do on Your Own: The Yale Stacks Cleaning
Program"
Erika Heinen, Collections Care Librarian, Yale University Libraries
Describing the contract process and the advantages and disadvantages of
cleaning books with outsourced staff.
