Position:  Preservation Officer
Available:  Immediately

Emory University seeks a creative, forward-looking Preservation Officer
to lead, manage and develop a mature, nationally known preservation
program.  The program provides a full spectrum of preservation services
to insure long-term access to and retention of materials in all formats,
from rare books and manuscripts to a rapidly expanding network of
electronic resources.

Responsibilities:
The Preservation Officer plans, organizes, coordinates, and implements
the preservation program for all Emory University libraries.  The
preservation program includes management and coordination of
preservation activities for collections in all formats and management
and coordination of activities for the offsite Storage Library.  The
Preservation Officer works in a team based environment to initiate the
use of new technologies and to coordinate an established range of
services related to preservation and to offsite storage for collections
in the General Libraries, Health Science Library, Law Library, Oxford
Library and Theology Library.  The Preservation Officer represents the
Emory University libraries in appropriate regional and national forums.

The Preservation Officer will focus on developing applications for
digital technology for preservation; significantly expand preservation
services for non-print collections; develop and implement processes for
electronic delivery of materials housed in the Storage Library; design
and integrate a conservation triage area with the collections
conservator for use in evaluating and performing initial inspections and
treatments of gift collections; write grants, and coordinate with
national and regional programs.

The Preservation Officer coordinates a program that provides staff and
user education; collection review, reformatting and replacement;
conservation treatment of print and non-print collections; environmental
monitoring; disaster preparedness planning; budget management and
development, and contract management for out-sourced services.
Responsibilities include leading a team comprised of two conservators,
4.5 FTE support staff, student assistants and liaison staff in each of
the university libraries.

Institutional Information: As a member of the Executive Strategy Group
for the General Libraries the Preservation Officer reports to the Vice
Provost and Director of Libraries.  As a leader of an office providing
university-wide services, the Preservation Officer reports to the
Librarians Council (directors of all of the Emory libraries).  In FY 01,
there were 15.3 FTE engaged in preservation activities university-wide
representing a budgetary commitment of $644,000. For more information

Qualifications:  ALA-accredited MLS with advanced training in
preservation administration and 5 or more years relevant experience, or
other equivalent combinations of education and experience.  The
successful candidate will have demonstrated knowledge of the
applications and issues involved in digital technology and the
preservation of non-print media.  Experience in grant writing and
evidence of initiative, collaboration, and outreach are important.
Knowledge of preservation and collection management practices and
issues, involvement with regional and national preservation programs;
demonstrated managerial and organizational ability with strong
interpersonal skills; excellent oral and written communication skill;
and demonstrated interest in professional activities are essential
qualifications.
