Collection Assessment Librarian (Temporary Position)

The Preservation Department of the Duke University Libraries seeks an
energetic and creative librarian for a one-year project to assess the
condition of both the general and special collections of Perkins Library.
Under the guidance of the Preservation Officer, the Collection Assessment
Librarian will develop and conduct a survey assessing the condition of
printed volumes, audiotapes, and videotapes in the general and special
collections; draft the final report summarizing the results; and present
that report to appropriate groups within the library.  Information
generated through the assessment project will support development of
preservation priorities. This position offers an excellent opportunity to
provide significant support for Preservation Department planning, to
represent the Department in meetings with resource specialists throughout
the Perkins Library System, and to help identify potential preservation
projects.

Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Preservation Officer, the Collection Assessment
Librarian will:
·  design a collection assessment survey;
·  develop a statistically valid random sample of books and periodicals;
·  conduct a survey of the collections in the Perkins Library general
   collections and the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections
   Library;
·  consult with resource specialists for additional insights into
   preservation projects or priorities;
·  draft the report describing the results of the project and estimating
   the resources required to respond to the recommendations;
·  as time permits, participate in other projects assigned by the
   Preservation Officer.

Qualifications
Required:  master's degree in library science from an ALA-accredited
program; demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and carry out long-term
projects; excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication
skills; ability to work independently and in a highly collaborative
service-oriented environment.Desirable:  knowledge of library preservation
and condition assessment methodology.

Salary and Benefits
Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience; $34,800 minimum.
Comprehensive benefits package includes 20 days vacation, 13 holidays, 12
