[PADG:1633] preservation of a/v materials in general collections of academic libraries

I am interested in discovering if any preservation departments of academic
libraries are extending their services to include audio-visual materials
such as audio tapes, video tapes, and films in general collections (i.e.,
non-archival materials).

Are you called when a tape gets jammed in the player or becomes detached
from its hub?
Are you surveying the collection for materials that need to be replaced due
to excessive use, poor image or sound quality, etc.?
And what about all those 16mm films collecting dust now that all the
projectors are broken and VHS or DVD copies have been purchased? Are the
films de-accessioned, surveyed for possible transfer to special
collections, or simply ignored?

Any information is greatly appreciated.

Hannah
