Brittle Books Coordinator (Academic Professional) University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign Position Available: April 1, 2002, a full time, academic professional position. Responsibilities: Reporting to the Head of Preservation, the incumbent will manage the day-to-day operation and preparation of materials for reformatting via microfilm and other imaging technologies. The Brittle Books Coordinator will assist bibliographers, collection managers, and subject librarians in making treatment decisions appropriate to the materials in hand. Responsibilities will include regular sessions with faculty, bibliographic searching, and coordinating the workflow for replacement and reformatting. The incumbent will prepare materials for preservation photo-duplication or imaging, including: collation, minor repair, and target preparation. The incumbent will also monitor some aspects of quality control. The Brittle Books Coordinator will monitor resources allocated for commercial reprographic and imaging services within the Departments of Preservation and Conservation budget. Additionally, the incumbent will be responsible for planning projects for the microfilming unit, working with other units within the Departments of Preservation and Conservation, and record keeping. Experience in an academic library in the capacity of support staff or higher. Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with librarians, staff, students, and vendors. Effective written, oral, and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of OCLC and other bibliographic utilities is required, although expert knowledge is not required. Demonstrated ability to participate in planning and implementing projects. Preferred: Supervisory experience. Desired: Understanding of principles behind library and archival preservation and conservation practice. Experience in working with the preservation of embrittled materials. Knowledge of Access and/or other database systems. Salary: Salary is competitive and is commensurate with credentials and experience. Terms of Appointment: Twelve month appointment; 24 work days vacation per year; 11 paid holidays; 12 days annual sick leave (cumulative up to a maximum of 240 days) plus an additional 13 days (non-cumulative) per year if necessary; health insurance, requiring a small co-payment, is provided to employees (coverage for dependants may be purchased); participation in the State Universities Retirement System is required upon appointment (8% of member?s salary is withheld and is tax exempt until retirement); newly hired university employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security, and are subject to its deduction.
