LC National Digital Library announces release of Conservation paper

The Library of Congress National Digital Library Program and the
Conservation Division announce the release of the paper ?Conservation
Implications of Digitization Projects?.  It is available at the
Background Papers and Technical Information page in the American Memory
website as a two-part PDF document.

The paper was produced with the support of the NDLP,  by NDLP staff in
the Conservation Division and the Conservation liaisons to the NDLP who
all have worked as an integral part of our Conversion Group in the
planning, processing and production of the now more than sixty
collections available online through American Memory.  The multi-faceted
and precedent setting role which conservation plays in digital image
conversion projects in the NDLP in the areas of consultation, training,
and treatment for scanning is discussed.  Such activities include: 
consultation on space, environment, equipment, training of contractor
and NDLP staff, and conservation review for scanning and associated
treatment.  A major goal of the NDLP has been to assure that all items
scanned within the program are carefully evaluated and treated or
protected throughout the process.  Also included are files for the
handouts prepared for the required course developed for NDLP and
contractor staff ?Care and Handling of Library Materials for Digital
Scanning?.  Additional information will appear in the coming months
which will provide details regarding experience with specific NDLP
collections.
