Re: Preserving our nations heritage

TO ALL SUPPORTERS:

Yesterday we filed a lawsuit in Federal Court against the Army Corps of
Engineers, the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority, Oglebay Norton
Company, and Signature Services, Inc. to hold them accountable for violating
the National Historic Preservation Act.

Wednesday, December 15, 1999 at 2:00 in the Courtroom of Judge O'Malley
in the Federal Courthouse at Superior Ave. and Public Square, there will be
the first hearing on the lawsuit.

PLEASE NOTIFY ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS AND OTHERS TO SHOW UP AND BE PRESENT
AT THE HEARING. LETS US DEMONSTRATE TO THE JUDGE AND THE MEDIA THE SUPPORT
FOR THE PRESERVATION OF THE HISTORIC INTEGRITY OF THE C&P ORE DOCK AND THE
HULETT ORE UNLOADERS AT THEIR ORIGINAL SITE.
THAT WAY WE HAVE A POSSIBILITY OF OBTAINING A UNITED STATES NATIONAL
LANDMARK DESIGNATION. SOMETHING SO UNIQUE, BELONGING TO CLEVELANDERS AND THE
NATION, DESERVES AND REQUIRES THE PRESERVATION AT ITS ORIGINAL SITE.
AN OFFER BY THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE HAS BEEN IN PLACE FOR FUNDING ($
3,000.00) A STUDY TO ESTABLISH THE ELIGIBILITY FOR THIS SITE TO BECOME A
NATIONAL LANDMARK.

THANK FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT - PLEASE BELOW FOR ADDITIONAL ACTIVITY

THE COMMITTEE HAS ISSUED A POSTCARD OF THE HULETT ORE UNLOADERS LIT UP
AT NIGHT. THE LIGHTING EVENT TOOK PLACE ON THE EVENING OF FRIDAY OCTOBER 29,
1999. WE COULD NOT HAVE ASKED FOR BETTER CONDITIONS - CALM, CLEAR AND ~70
degrees. I call that "divine intervention and support." The image (no even
close to the beauty of the postcard) used in the postcard will be posted on
our website shortly along with instructions on how to order the postcards.
We have commemorative cups available now so visit to see these potential
gifts for the holidays.

ALSO A SLIGHTLY CROPPED IMAGE OF THE POSTCARD IMAGE WAS PUBLISHED ALONG
WITH A STORY OF THE LIGHTING EVENT IN THE DECEMBER ISSUE OF NORTHERN OHIO
LIVE MAGAZINE .

THE POSTCARD HAS THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION ON THE ADDRESS SIDE:

"The Hulett Iron Ore Unloaders
Whiskey Island, Cleveland, Ohio
Supporters stage clandestine lighting of Huletts, Oct. 29, 1999

The 'Hulett,' a highly efficient ore unloading machine unique to the
Great Lakes, was invented by Clevelander George Hulett in 1898. Over 75
Huletts were built, revolutionizing ore shipping. These Cleveland Huletts
[photograph on postcard], electrically-powered with 17-ton capacity buckets,
standing some 10 stories tall and weighing in at 880 tons, were built in
1912, and unloaded ore boats continuously until 1992. Their productivity
made Cleveland the greatest iron ore terminus in the world. With most
Huletts demolished and sold for scrap, and only six remaining, Cleveland's
battery of four are the oldest. They are a Cleveland landmark, and Historic
Mechanical Engineering Landmark, and are on the National Register of
Historic Places.

NOW, 100 YEARS OF OUR NATIONAL AND LOCAL HERITAGE ARE ABOUT TO BE
ERASED. The Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority's and Oglebay Norton
Company's determination to tear down the Huletts is on record. Future
generations deserve the Huletts to be preserved at their current historic
site. Moral, and especially financial support is needed to continue the
fight to preserve these man-made marvels. In the words of a past Hulett
operator, `Only God could have designed a finer piece of machinery.'

HELP TO WRITE A HAPPY ENDING.
