The Head, Preservation Department is a faculty librarian position that
directs and supervises the staff and activities of the Preservation
Department.  Responsibilities include the In-House Book Repair Program,
the Brittle Books Program, Commercial Binding, and Disaster Planning as
well as performing conservation and preservation related work as
necessary.  Reports to the Assistant University Librarian of the
University Library System.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for planning, establishing and coordinating a comprehensive
preservation program for the collections of the University Library
System.  Coordinates preservation activities to ensure consistency,
productivity, and cost-effectiveness across the full range of
preservation activities;  and implements policies and procedures in
accord with national standards for preservation access.  

Develops and maintains the University of Pittsburgh's operational
capability for successful execution of large scale, complex preservation
and access projects within strict budget and time limits while
maintaining consistency and standards. Incumbent contributes to the
evolving national preservation program through the development and
improvement of techniques and standards and by participating in
professional associations. 

Explores digital technology as a means of preservation.  Works closely
with Coordinator of the Digital Research Library to continue
implementation of brittle books/digitization programs.   

Develops procedures for identifying deteriorated or deteriorating
materials and evaluation of preservation options. Manages the ongoing
work of the department as well as the planning and development of
campus-wide preservation initiatives.  Works closely with Library
Administration, curatorial staff, and bibliographers in establishing
preservation priorities for collections including standards for the
physical preparation and care of materials.  

Develops, implements, and manages special reformatting projects
involving digital technology, both within the University and with
outside vendors.   

Develops staff training programs in all areas of preservation and
appropriate user education.

Explores possible funding sources for preservation and prepare grant
proposals.

Oversees monitoring of environmental conditions of collections and
develops disaster preparedness and prevention programs. Assesses
disasters to the libraries' collections, determines appropriate
preservation actions, and coordinates implementation of relief
preservation efforts.

Represents the University Library System on national and regional
preservation issues.  

Maintains thorough knowledge of issues and techniques of all
preservation treatment options including conservation, conservation
repair/bookbinding, preservation microfilming, deacidification, and
commercial binding.  

Supervises, hires, trains, and evaluates department staff and student
assistants.  

Oversees Preservation Department budget and allocation of ULS binding
funds.  

Prepares necessary reports as required.

Participates in appropriate ULS working groups.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:


 ALA-accredited MLS (or recognized foreign equivalent).  

 Minimum of two years post-MLS experience in preservation (or related
area).  

 Demonstrated ability to plan projects, write reports, and communicate
effectively. 

 Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with
Library staff, users, and external organizations.  

 Knowledge of library materials preservation techniques, digital
technology, and experience in preservation administration.

Preferred:


 Supervisory experience.

 Experience in a research library preservation program.  

Salary:  $30,000 minimum.  Comprehensive benefits package including 23
vacation days/year; BC/BS; TIAA/CREF, Vanguard; and tuition assistance.
