Univ Ky position search extended



The University of Kentucky Libraries has extended its search for a
Conservation Librarian.  Position description and qualifications follow below:

Position:        Conservation Librarian

Available:       Review of applications to begin January 22, 1999 until 
                 position is filled.

Description:     The Conservation Librarian, a full-time, tenure track faculty
                 appointment, will supervise the conservation services at the
                 University of Kentucky Libraries.  The position will be based
                 in the Conservation Lab in the William T. Young Library and 
                 will report to the Preservation Librarian who oversees the
                 Preservation Program comprising three areas: conservation
                 services, binding services and reprographics.
                 
Responsibilities: The Conservation Librarian will oversee the conservation
                 services program for the University of Kentucky Library 
                 System.  This includes conservation and restoration services
                 for special collections and archives materials as well as the
                 book repair, in-house binding, box making, and restoration 
                 for circulating collections.  Working primarily with material
                 from the Special Collections Division, the Conservation 
                 Librarian will perform high-level conservation and 
                 restoration treatments on paper, parchment and vellum, both
                 bound and unbound, with bound volumes cased in cloth, paper
                 or leather and will perform or oversee other treatments 
                 including encapsulation, deacidification, and protective
                 enclosure construction.  The Conservation Librarian will 
                 train and supervise student assistants to perform book
                 repairs, pamphlet binding and box construction and will work
                 with other Library Service Centers to set up preservation 
                 facilities and services that work cooperatively with the
                 Young Conservation Lab.  The Conservation Librarian will
                 monitor supplies budgets, maintain the supplies inventory
                 and oversee the maintenance of conservation equipment.

                 Working with the Preservation Librarian, the Conservation
                 Librarian will assist with other preservation activities such
                 as disaster planning, preservation training, grant writing,
                 ARL Preservation Statistics, collection surveys and
                 environmental monitoring.  The position will provide 
                 reference service/document delivery on preservation related
                 topics to university and non-university community and will
                 actively represent the University of Kentucky in local,
                 regional and national preservation efforts through 
                 participation in conferences and professional forums.

Qualifications:  · Masters degree in library science, conservation studies,
                   archival studies or related field.
                 · Conservation training from an established conservation
                   studies program.
                 · Experience in the conservation of books, manuscripts, maps
                   and other library and archival materials excluding 
                   photographic media.  Portfolio of work is required at
                   interview.
                 · Conservation experience in an academic library or 
                   research facility.
                 · Ability to work with minimal supervision.
                 · Outstanding verbal and written communication and leadership
                   skills.
                  
Salary:          $28,000 minimum

Library:         The University of Kentucky Libraries consists of
                 a main library and 12 branches.  Combined
       
                 holdings total more than 2.6 million volumes.

                 121 support staff and serves a student body of
