Thanks for replies received on the "Mezzotone" topic. However, there is
no
doubt that this item is a normal photographic portrait from a
professional
studio and that the printing press had nothing to do with its making.
Having re-examined it and looked through the PPFA volume on photography,
it
seems probable that this print is simply a normal (for the period) matt
collodion, with appropriate toning to make the shadows look a dark
chocolate
brown. The carbon print ridging effect is missing and there are no signs
of
cracking in the dark areas.
However, that was also the case with another portrait from the same
studio,
twenty or thirty years older and clearly labelled as a carbon print.
Hence my
question as to whether "Mezzotone" identifies a carbon process picture.
Still in the dark.
