High:  Expecting just what you suggested, I again examined the
moulding--very thoroughly this time--and it appears the soap and water
process was used lightly all over, then rather thoroughly on only one
long side of the ornate part of the moulding.  When I first saw it, I
too thought we may be back down to the original antiquing, but not so. 
The upshot: more cleaning is necessary to have it appear somewhat
uniform.  I will direct myself to the consdis sites, and I thank you
all very much.
