Conservation Specialist
The Henry Ford Museum

Part-time position

The Henry Ford is seeking a reliable individual to assist the paper
conservator in the treatment of 2-D artifacts, with a background in
conservation, studio work, art, bookbinding, matting and framing.
Good manual dexterity, color perception, and detail-oriented to
handle diverse duties such as treatment of paper artifacts under the
supervision of the conservator, writing associated reports, day to
day maintenance of lab, equipment, and supplies.  Must be organized
and be able to take direction and follow through and work well with
diverse staff.  Photography and good writing skills desirable.  Some
knowledge of chemistry and lab practices are preferred.

Summary of purpose:  The specialist will be responsible for the
movement, examination, documentation, treatment and general
preparation of collection artifacts for the general treatments,
digitization and exhibition projects Participates in assigned
activities that identify, locate, conserve and move artifacts for
loans, exhibition, storage upgrades, photography or scanning.
Documents all activities via e-mail and/or the museum's collections
management system.  Under the direction of the Supervising
Conservator coordinates work with the conservation, collection
management, exhibits and digitization staff and others to ensure
timely completion of assigned tasks.  The specialist will work as a
member of or in cooperation with a variety of teams to accomplish
the institutions mission and goals.

Essential FUnctions

    Carries out examination and conservation treatment activities
    under the direction of a conservator in collaboration with the
    other teams

    Moves artifacts as required for conservation, condition
    evaluation and imaging as required Must be able to carry out
    work in careful manner following established procedures and
    practices to ensure that artifacts are not damaged during
    movement.

    Documents conservation treatments and the condition of artifacts
    both via written reports and photographic images Enters
    documentation into the established computerized collections
    management system.  Carries out condition assessment surveys on
    assigned collections.

    Accurately records location changes for moved artifacts via
    e-mail and/or location change forms for entry into the
    computerized collections management system Provides timely
    reports on status of projects to supervisor.

    Carries out research on assigned digitization and conservation
    projects as assigned

    Routinely maintains assigned lab areas in a clean and
    uncluttered condition Assists in the maintenance of supplies,
    chemicals and tools.  Prepares adhesives, detergents and solvent
    mixtures for assigned areas.

    Assists imaging specialist and photographer with the movement,
    handling and general set-up of artifacts for scanning or
    photography

    Performs other activities as necessary

    Contributes to the effective team management of all problems,
    issues, and opportunities

    Acts as a team player and provides expertise within team and
    with other teams as appropriate

Minimum Requirements

    Requires BA in art, history, art history or equivalent
    experience must have good hand-eye coordination: basic
    demonstrated art and craft skills

    Good oral and written communication skills

    The ability to carefully lift, pack and move a variety of
    artifacts

    Experience using windows based computer software including
    Microsoft Word and Excel, proficient in conducting research
    (Including internet research)

    Must be able to follow instructions and established procedures
    for movement, conservation and documentation of conservation and
    collection management activities

Special Skills:

    Advanced skill in art and crafts such as: molding casting,
    carpentry, painting, photography, color matching, ceramics,
    sculpture, metal working, matting or framing Experience using a
    database such as Access or collection management software
    desired
