Subject: FAIC scholarships
The International Preservation Studies Center (formerly the Campbell Center for Historic Preservation Studies) has a few more $300 FAIC Scholarships to award. <URL:http://www.preservationcenter.org/scholarships> All you need to receive the scholarship is proof of your AIC membership--register today. FAIC Scholarships can be applied for the following courses. The Modified FAIC Selecting Adhesives for Conservation Instructor: Julia Fenn August 30 - September 2, 2016 <URL:http://www.preservationcenter.org/the-modified-faic-selecting-adhesives-fo> This course focuses on understanding the characteristics and limitations of different classes of natural and synthetic adhesives which can be matched against various bonding problems. The choice of adhesive will include assessing the nature of the substrate, application and clamping techniques, toxicity and the degree of reversibility. Plans for reversing the treatment, not just the bond, are an essential part of the process. Problem solving and practical assessment comprises a large part of the course. Participants will use simple exercises for evaluating current adhesives for application to specific situations. These tests can also be used to check whether old stocks are still viable and to help to identify when unannounced manufacturing changes have caused alterations in the properties of "recommended" museum adhesives. Naturally aged adhesives will be available for handling and examination. This is an abridged version of the popular FAIC Adhesives course, as a result, several of the original lectures have had to be omitted but most of them are available at the Campbell Center for participants to view on request. Updates on recent research with museum relevance such as 'smart adhesives', nano- particle fillers and bio-mimetic adhesives have been included in this version of the course. Parchment Conservation Instructor: Sheila Fairbrass-Siegler September 7-10, 2016 <URL:http://www.preservationcenter.org/parchment-conservation> The course will provide an introduction to parchment, its manufacture and use, and some of the techniques involved in its conservation and care. It will be useful for anyone involved in its conservation or who has parchment or parchment artifacts in their collection. The course will consist of morning lectures and afternoon experiments where participants can explore techniques in the controlled environment of the laboratory. Course topic will include: the identification of parchment; history and manufacture; examination; surface preparation; cleaning, flattening, and repairing; materials and adhesives; techniques; and housing options. Introduction to Organic Chemistry Instructor: Dr. Sheila Fairbrass Siegler September 13-16, 2016 <URL:http://www.preservationcenter.org/introduction-to-organic-chemistry> If you have forgotten the alkane series, are at a loss over functional groups and completely confused about acids and bases, then this course will gently guide you through the fundamentals of organic chemistry. The course is divided into morning lectures and discussion and afternoon practical, hands-on labs. Topics will include bonding and structure, functional groups, acids and bases, polymers, paper chemistry and textile chemistry. *** Conservation DistList Instance 30:14 Distributed: Friday, August 19, 2016 Message Id: cdl-30-14-005 ***Received on Monday, 15 August, 2016
