The Strong seeks an experienced and energetic professional to direct
the conservation of The Strong's varied collections including a
comprehensive array of toys, board games, dollhouse miniatures, and
arcade games and to supervise four staff members.

The successful candidate must have superior oral and written
communication skills, experience in and enthusiasm for working
collaboratively in a team-based environment, capacity for strategic
thinking and planning, and ability both to delegate and to lead by
example.

Duties and Responsibilities:

    Examines and treats museum collections, as needed, with strict
    adherence to AIC's Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
    Maintains thorough and accurate records of conservation
    examinations, treatment data, and documentary photographs.
    Tasks include performing treatments to stabilize collection
    objects through cleaning, repair, and restoration; supervising
    the Doll Conservator, Arcade Game Conservation Engineer, and
    Conservation Technicians in their projects; and maintaining an
    inventory of appropriate supplies and tools for treatments

    Directs the overall operation of the conservation function and
    acts as an active internal advocate for ways in which
    conservation can contribute to the overall mission of the
    institution

    Develops and executes plans for the long term preservation of
    the collection, working in collaboration with the Collections
    Team and the Building Manager.  Tasks include performing regular
    inspections of collections on display and in storage; monitoring
    environmental conditions at regular intervals and working toward
    improved environmental conditions as necessary; assessing
    lighting and making recommendations for any needed changes; and
    training new staff, interns, and volunteers in artifact handling

    Maintains artifacts on exhibit, working in collaboration with
    the Collections Team, Exhibits Team, and Hosts Team.  Tasks
    include performing regular inspections of objects on display;
    participating in implementing regular rotations of
    light-sensitive items; and performing regular treatments of
    displayed objects, especially carousel horses

    Advises and assists with planning exhibits to ensure the
    long-term preservation of objects on display and participates in
    the installation of artifacts, working in collaboration with the
    Exhibits Team and the Collections Team.  Tasks include
    participating collaboratively in developing the exhibit design
    and lighting plan; consulting on materials, suppliers, and
    techniques to assure that exhibits uphold the latest
    conservation standards; preparing artifacts for installation;
    assisting with artifact mounts, as circumstances require; and
    assisting with artifact installation

    Assures the preservation of all loaned objects, working in
    conjunction with the Collections Manager and the curatorial
    staff.  Tasks include documenting incoming and outgoing artifact
    condition; reviewing all artifacts considered for outgoing
    loans; and establishing standards for packing, shipping, and
    display

    Adheres to timetables as dictated by exhibit schedules and other
    project deadlines

    Attends collection staff and general staff meetings, and others
    as assigned

    Serves on museum's acquisitions, outgoing loans, and
    deaccessioning teams, and others as assigned, including exhibit
    teams as needed

    Contributes as feasible to the museum's Play Stuff blog

Qualifications:

    Advanced degree in conservation

    Significant experience in relevant artifact conservation,
    including digital

    Demonstrated skills in project management and supervision

    Knowledge of key issues and standards in lighting and
    environmental conditions and experience with their application
    in artifact storage and exhibition

    Commitment to quality guest service
