New speaker

It is with regret that the ICON Paintings Group must announce the
cancellation of John Finlay's talk Ripolin, flags, wicker and wood:
Picasso's "'Notre Avenir est dans l'Air" (1912) and the Invention of
Cubist Sculpture, 1912-14 on 26 September 2016. This is due to
health reasons and I am sure we all wish John the very best and are
sad to miss his talk--he is a very good speaker.

But please keep the date, 26 September 2016 free in your diaries as
Rebecca Hellen has agreed to give us a talk on that date.

Rebecca Hellen will talk on "Fearful Difficult Subject" Carnation,
Lily, Lily, Rose (1885-86) and Sargent's process: New research.

This study was originally begun as part of wider research into
Sargent's methods and materials for easel paintings, carried out at
Tate with Joyce Townsend. A more focused piece was then developed
with art historian Elaine Kilmurray. This will be at the centre of
the talk for September 26, 2016, revealing new evidence and its
deepening of our understanding of this iconic work.

Rebecca Hellen is a practicing Paintings Conservator at Tate Britain
and has worked at Tate since 2002. Her Diploma in the Conservation
of Easel Paintings was gained from the Courtauld Institute of Art in
1998.

Her focus on Sargent began with treatment of his easel paintings at
Tate, and has deepened recently with research supported by The Paul
Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art.

A joint essay with Senior Conservation Scientist, Dr Joyce Townsend,
"'The Way in which He Does it': The Making of Sargent's Oils" in
John Singer Sargent: Figures and Landscapes, 1914-1925 (Complete
Paintings, vol. 9, Richard Ormond and Elaine Kilmurray Yale
University Press) is forthcoming.

In the Robing Room at Freemason's Hall, 60 Great Queen Street London
WC2B 5AZ.

Freemasons Hall is close to both Covent Garden and Holborn Tube
Stations.
