Audio Visual Preservation Specialist University of Kansas Libraries Position Summary: This position plays a key role in preserving the University of Kansas Libraries' valuable and unique collections by enhancing the University's capacity to preserve and make available recorded sound and moving image materials. The incumbent will report to the Head of Conservation Services and maintain a number of critical working relationships with units and groups that are engaged in preservation, curation, and access to media. The Audio Visual Preservation Specialist will assist archivists, curators, collection managers, and public services staff in identifying at-risk collections, will suggest appropriate reformatting options, and will direct the day-to-day operations of reformatting projects, maintenance of equipment, and development of workflows in support of preservation, description, and access. Collection Processing - 65% Care and reformatting of analog audio and moving image collection Stabilize, clean, and evaluate the condition of sound and moving image media in a wide variety of formats Systematically survey collections and provide storage recommendations Judge whether media can safely be digitized locally or sent to an outside vendor Identify vendors and complete RFPs for services; manage the shipping process Digitize audio and video recordings following international preservation reformatting guidelines and best practices Perform quality control and monitor conversion quality on in-house and vendor projects Record appropriate administrative metadata based on industry best practice and descriptive metadata following local practices Finish deliverables of digitized files (burning media, labeling, duplication, uploading to network storage, etc.) Manage, hire, train, and coordinate work of student employees Identify and evaluate hardware and digitization software Support library staff members in providing patron access to analog collections and digital surrogates Collaborate with other library personnel to incorporate digitized materials into digital collections workflows and infrastructure Project planning and management - 20% Develop and implement prioritized preservation options and workflows for projects, including for material sent to offsite cool and cold storage Assist in developing metadata protocols Assist in developing strategies for delivery of digital sound and moving images Compile statistics and prepare reports, including project costs Departmental responsibilities - 15% Serve on the Collections Emergency Response Team and assist with disaster preparedness and recovery operations following standard procedures Assist with preventive programs such as environmental monitoring and pest management as needed Assist in the preparation of grant proposals Stay current with developments in the field of audiovisual preservation Prepare, conduct, and participate in staff and public outreach and educational opportunities Participate in departmental meetings and planning activities, including departmental goal-setting Participate in the broader work of KU Libraries by serving on committees, working groups, and task forces as appropriate Other duties as assigned For details or to apply see <URL:https://employment.ku.edu/staff/6792BR> Whitney Baker Head, Conservation Services University of Kansas Libraries Lawrence KS 66045-7544 *** Conservation DistList Instance 30:11 Distributed: Sunday, July 31, 2016 Message Id: cdl-30-11-023 ***Received on Wednesday, 27 July, 2016
