Book conservation and binding workshops in Oxford, UK

English Cloth Case Binding workshop
13-14 August, 2016
UKP180
Tutor: Arthur Green

Probably the most familiar style of binding known to us today
and, although a product of 19th century mass production, case
binding was popularised in a period where much was still done by
hand. This workshop is suitable for beginners or those wishing
to hone their skills. The two days will cover fundamental
bookbinding forwarding techniques such as sewing, rounding and
backing, and good choice of spine linings.

Embroidered Leather Notebook
3-4 September 2016
UKP180
Tutor: Hannah Brown

Create striking cover designs for bindings by combining simple
embroidery techniques with leather onlays. This two-day
workshop will teach you a variety of different embroidery
stitches and how to apply these to a design in order to add
attractive surface decoration to your leather. As part of the
course you will learn how to back-pare leather ahead of
embroidering it and then tuition will be given on how to apply
the decorated leather cover to a notebook.

An Introduction to Bookbinding
24 September 2016
UKP90
Tutor: Arthur Green

A fun and informative day which will introduce the subject of
bookbinding including tools and materials, terminology and a bit
of the history too. You will get to make a simple binding and
have a go at hand printing a label.

Conserving a Cloth Case Binding
22-23 October 2016
UKP180 (bring own projects)
Tutor: Arthur Green

Cloth case bindings survive in great numbers and are often
beautifully embossed or blocked with vivid designs. Over two
days you will be taught how to assess and sympathetically repair
these books whilst addressing some of the structural and
material problems which cause them to fail. The course will
cover repair techniques such as re-backing, sewing, repairing
and consolidating boards and good choice of materials.

Parchment Repair
12 November 2016
UKP90 (plus materials fee)
Tutor: Arthur Green

A practical day looking at conservation techniques used to
repair parchment. This workshop will concentrate on parchment
repairs using new repair-parchment and gelatine based adhesives.
The day will include the selection and preparation of
repair-parchment and the preparation of two adhesives: warm
gelatine and a cold gelatine mousse. The techniques used to
apply repairs will also be covered.

Springback binding
28 November- 2 December 2016 (5 days)
UKP450
Tutor: Arthur Green

Patented in 1799 by John and Joseph Williams, the springback
soon became a popular style of stationery binding because of its
robust covers and ability to open flat. They survive in vast
numbers in our libraries and archives, however few are now
familiar with how they are bound. On this five day course you
will learn all of the operations that go into making this unique
binding, from folding sheets and sewing the text-block, to
making the spring and lever, and then on to the split-boards and
    finally covering.

Workshops provide step-by-step tuition in small groups at the studio
in Oxfordshire. Please contact Arthur for further details
