Conservation

Purpose: This is an exciting time to join the team in Paper
conservation, as we look forward to our move to new purpose built
conservation facilities at Kidbrooke.  Leading the team, you will be
responsible for establishing the new studio facility.  Alongside the
studio move, paper based collections will also be moving, and you
will be responsible for overseeing the conservation contribution to
this major project.  You will lead the work in conserving and
preserving the National Maritime Museum's collection of paper-based
objects (in particular prints and drawings, photographs and film
collections) and play a key role in assisting the Museum to achieve
its day-to-day and long term goals and objectives.

Responsibilities

    Manage and supervise the work of staff, technicians, students,
    interns and volunteers on paper-based collections

    Plan workload for the paper studio; provide time and budget
    estimates and write specifications for external conservation
    contracts

    Provide leadership for and ensure ongoing professional
    development of paper studio staff to better allow the Section to
    fulfil its role in keeping with the Museum's objectives

    Undertake complex and challenging treatments of paper objects in
    the Museum's collection (or other historic objects related to
    the nation's heritage as required) to the highest standard, to
    time and within agreed resources

    Advise the Museum's senior management, colleagues across the
    Museum, other museums and public on issues of condition,
    treatment, transport, storage and display including assisting
    with grant applications

    Develop the understanding and knowledge of the collections
    through technical analysis, research and investigation

    Evaluate storage and display conditions within the Museum to
    further the preservation of the objects in the Museum's care

    Record all treatments by text and image, including all materials
    used and relevant techniques

    Actively and effectively represent the Section, Department and
    Division within and outside the Museum; contribute to the
    development and delivery of the Museum's public engagement
    programme as required

    Make certain that the highest levels of health and safety are
    maintained for self, staff, volunteers and visitors

    The above mentioned tasks are neither exclusive nor exhaustive
    and the post holder may be called upon to carry out such other
    appropriate duties as may be required by the Museum within the
    competence of the post holder.

Skills and experience

Essential

    Be an acknowledged leader in the field of paper conservation

    Demonstrate experience of managing and motivating staff

    Be able to delegate and prioritise tasks across multiple
    projects, deliver a high standard of work.

    Have a flexible approach to work and be able to work under
    pressure either in a team or on own initiative.

    Demonstrate work of high practical and ethical standards on
    prints and drawings or other paper-based objects.

    Be able to communicate complex issues effectively showing an
    understanding of the impact of culture, role and politics.

    Demonstrate a consistent record of continuing professional
    development, including training (both received and delivered).

    Be computer literate with knowledge of Word, Excel, Outlook and
    electronic collections management database

Desirable

    Be accredited under the PACR or equivalent or working towards
    accreditation.

    Demonstrate experience of conservation of prints and drawings.

    Have a respected publications record (both refereed and
    non-refereed).

    Demonstrate good project management skills.

    Demonstrate an understanding of the preservation issues relating
    to photographic and film collections.

Terms and Conditions: The post holder will work a 41 hour week, core
hours Monday to Friday 80am to 4pm with an additional hour to be
worked in agreement with line management.

Salary:  UKP30,000 - UKP37,000 per annum
