Origin of claim of funori drying matte

From: Rod Stewart <rod<-at->

Can anyone point me to the earliest instance of the claim that the
polysaccharide starch extracted from the red seaweeds gloiopeltis
tenax and gloiopeltis furcata dries matte when applied. Our
experience is that the extract from these plants which grow together
and are seldom sorted, presents a dead matte sheen some times and a
very low sheen at other times--but not dead matte all of the time.
Is it possible that the difference between tenax and furcata is
sheen?

Have the sheen characteristics of funori been studied?
