Subject: Lecture on Picasso and Cubism
John Finlay Will speak on Ripolin, flags, wicker and wood: Picasso's "Notre Avenir est dans l'Air" (1912) and the Invention of Cubist Sculpture, 1912-14 Robing Room at Freemason's Hall 60 Great Queen Street London WC2B 5AZ. Monday, 26 September 2016 Doors open at 6pm Talk 6:30 - 8pm Freemasons Hall is close to both Covent Garden and Holborn Tube Stations. Cubism was the artistic counterpart of the upheaval that was happening in technology, manufacturing, and engineering--a transformation that required new working methods and materials of production. My talk particularises these ideas by showing that Picasso's earliest Cubist sculpture relied heavily on the artist's empathy with aviation pioneers and his personal assimilation of that identity. Picasso's earliest constructions and wall assemblages have acquired great scholarly recognition, but as this talk makes evident using interrelated Cubist sculptures, paintings and collages of 1912-14 as my central focus, they justify a fresh investigation in the light of the new inventions and the labours of aviators and concomitant operators. This article not only elaborates on the scholarship of those who have proposed comparable ideas for the worker in the context of Cubism, but also makes effective use of (and responds to) some of the important technical findings in relation to Picasso's use of Ripolin paint and other materials used in his Cubist work. John Finlay studied Art History and Theory at Essex University (1989-92) and received his MA (1993) and PhD on 'Picasso's Constructions and Assemblages: 1912-35' from the Courtauld Institute of Art, London (1998). He is a historian of French history, specialising in twentieth-century modern art. Finlay has contributed articles to the Burlington Magazine and the Musee Picasso, Paris, where has published on topics including Picasso, Giacometti, Cubism and Surrealism. His book Picasso's World was published by Carlton Books (London) and Larousse (as Le Monde de Picasso) in 2011. His new book Pop! is published by Goodman Books (2016).
