Deadline: July 3, 2016, 23:59

Full Time - Permanent

Salary: UKP22,500 - UKP25,800

Benefits: BUPA medical and dental cover, season ticket loan,

The Science Museum Group is seeking a highly-motivated, enthusiastic
and experienced Objects Conservator to join the Conservation and
Collections Care team based at our main storage site at Wroughton
near Swindon in Wiltshire.

Part of the Group's ambitious programme of capital projects, putting
our collections at the heart of everything we do, is the
redevelopment of our site at Wroughton. This is a very exciting
time for the site's Conservation and Collections Care team as site
storage upgrades and object moves are planned and implemented.

You will actively participate in conserving scientific,
technological, engineering, transport and medical collections
objects both large and small. You will advise on collections care
for storage and display, including the major redevelopment of
permanent galleries, and on loans. You will participate in the
site's preventive conservation programme, including integrated pest
management and environmental monitoring.

You will be able to work both independently and collaboratively in a
team-based environment to enable the site development programme;
interact effectively with conservation and collections care and
other museum colleagues; communicate effectively, clearly,
concisely, and persuasively.

You will have current experience and demonstrable skills in the
conservation, handling and safe movement of large to very large
heritage objects. You will have competent organisational,
analytical, time and project management skills and excellent problem
solving and decision making skills, with the ability to formulate
and implement innovative approaches and solutions to problems. You
will be capable of working under challenging conditions due to the
size and conditions of the site and storage facilities.

You will need to be aware of hazard management procedures associated
with historical objects and have a good knowledge of Health and
Safety procedures, including risk assessment and safe use of
chemicals for lab safety and collections management. The ability to
use Collections databases (Mimsy XG) will be essential as will a
full and clean driver's licence and the ability to train on lifting
equipment such as reachtrucks and forklifts.

The Science Museum Group (SMG) comprises the Science Museum in
London, the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester, the
National Railway Museum in York and Shildon and the National Media
Museum in Bradford. Together they share a unifying mission to
engage people in a dialogue about the past, present and future of
human ingenuity in the fields of science, technology, medicine,
transport and media.

Candidates shortlisted for interview will be asked to bring a
portfolio of their recent work and will undergo a practical
assessment. This role is subject to a Disclosure Scotland basic
criminal record check. You must be eligible to work in the UK. The
full job description is available on the Science Museum website
