Conservator
National Conservation Service
Oxfordshire, UK

The National Conservation Service (UK) has a vacancy for an
experienced conservator at its unique collaborative storage scheme
in Oxfordshire.

The post involves planning and supporting NCS members in preparing
museum, library, archive and gallery collections for storage at the
NCS - Restore Plc partnership service at Upper Heyford, Oxfordshire.

It will include the maintenance of environmental and pest monitoring
regimes at the stores, the appropriate storage and packaging of a
wide variety of heritage materials, safe and efficient ingest of
collections into the stores, planning, managing and implementing
de-contamination and re-housing projects at the site's studio
facilities, advising NCS members and supporting the services' staff
and managers.

NCS is a not-for-profit membership organisation for archives,
libraries, museums and galleries that don't have directly employed
conservation staff. It currently supports over 120 institutions
across the UK, providing advice and implementing conservation
programmes (preventative and remedial) on-site in the institutions
and at studio locations in London, Oxfordshire and Cardiff. The NCS
staff team is currently seven conservators, with a growing band of
Associates and working with a wide range of specialist freelances.

The successful candidate will have several years of experience in
both remedial and preventive activities and will either be Icon
Accredited or ready for Accreditation (NCS will pay for
Accreditation fees). S/he will be a positive and communicative
self-starter, able to advise NCS members on the care of collections
in an easy-going and authoritative manner, and to work closely with
the NCS Director and Restore managers and staff in service planning.
A willingness and ability to work with and safely move heritage
objects and collections large and small, sometimes in dusty and
confined locations, is essential, as is the ability to drive. The
storage site is in a rural location, near Oxford, and the
post-holder will need to drive to work and from time to time to
drive to member institution locations (primarily in the immediate
region and in London).

The starting salary will be UKP30,000 - UKP32,000 p.a. for a 37.5 hr
week, depending on experience, plus a generous mileage allowance.
If you would like to receive a copy of the job description and are
interested in the role, please send a curriculum vitae to

storage scheme, see
