Editor, The Picture Restorer BAPCR, London, UK Two-year term, freelance Honorarium UKP1500 per issue (2 issues per year) Start: August 2016 First issue - Spring 2017. Job Description: The Editor assumes overall responsibility for producing The Picture Restorer journal twice a year in spring and autumn. This stimulating and challenging role requires exceptional organisational and communication skills. It has flexible working hours, and provides the opportunity to produce, direct and develop a well-established and widely-circulated publication while engaging with the painting-conservation community in the United Kingdom and beyond. It is anticipated that the Editor will be a paintings conservator themselves. More specifically, the editor will: Produce and manage the schedule for the publication of each issue Manage and motivate the Picture Restorer team, a sub-committee of the BAPCR Council, who are made up of volunteers from the painting-conservation community Work with the Picture Restorer team to generate ideas for articles, with the freedom to create themes for issues Commission and organise the submission of articles to meet deadlines Share the tasks of initial editing and proof reading with the feature editors and complete a second overall edit of all articles in order to ensure consistency of style and the high quality of submissions Coordinate and manage the work of feature editors to ensure all text and images conform to The Picture Restorer standards and style guides Liaise with the layout designer and ensure that all material is complete and properly formatted before passing on for layout. Write introductory passages and the Editorial column Report to, and maintain, regular contact with the BAPCR council Promote and champion the journal on behalf of the BAPCR within the field of conservation Manage the budget to ensure that the costs of producing the journal are balanced by revenue from advertising (with the support of the advertising manager) and subscriptions The BAPCR Council and Secretary will support the Editor in their role. Hours: As a guideline, it is estimated that the work involved will entail approximately one full working day per week (this will not be spread evenly throughout the year as more work will be required in the run up to layout and less at other times). Skills and Experience Essential: Ability to lead a team and act on own initiative Excellent written English Excellent organisational skills and ability to meet strict deadlines Excellent communication skills Excellent computer literacy Excellent knowledge of painting conservation terminology and practice Desirable Previous experience of editing/publishing.
