Horniman Museum

Full-time (35 hours per week) and fixed term until 31 March 2016

Salary UKP26,754 (rising to UKP27,300 on successful completion of

The HLF (Heritage Lottery Fund) has awarded UKP3.3m to the Horniman
Museum to create a World Gallery, due to open in 2018. This new
gallery will explore what it means to be human, and include objects
from a wide variety of continents, as well as community-curated
displays.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Conservator to
assist with the conservation and preparation of objects for this new
gallery. As well as a degree in Conservation, applicants must have
wide-ranging post-qualification experience, encompassing the care,
documentation and treatment of both organic and inorganic
anthropological objects in a museum environment.

The Conservator will be based partly at the main Museum site in
Forest Hill and partly at the Study Collections Centre in North
Greenwich. The postholder will contribute to other activities
undertaken by the Conservation section such as environmental
monitoring and compilation of environmental reports; internal staff
training in object handling, packing and transport; and supervision
of students and volunteers. Participation in public outreach
activities relating to the Anthropology Redisplay Project will also
be expected.
