Photographic Conservation Internship
National Library of Scotland

12-month internship

Reference: IIP1601

Stipend: UKP16,000

Closing Date: 10 June 2016

This internship is hosted by the National Library of Scotland, using
funding provided by the T. Graham Brown Trust.

This placement will focus on assisting the Library's Photographic
Collections Conservator with the care of the Library's photographic
collections, which are extremely varied and include items
illustrating a wide range formats and processes.

Specific training and work based activities for this internship will
be:

Surveying the Library's photographic collections to identify
priorities for preventive conservation measures and remedial
    treatments

Delivering a planned programme of conservation on the
photographic collections, including cleaning, repair of broken
glass plate negatives and lantern slides and repair of fragile
    photograph albums and bound volumes

Organising and re-housing parts of the photographic collections,
    sometimes working with volunteers

Preparing and installing exhibitions of photographic material

In addition, as a member of the Library's Conservation Unit the
intern will be involved in the day-to-day activities of the Unit,
including disaster planning, environmental monitoring, promotion of
the Unit's work through workshop tours and social media, working
with placement students, providing training for other Library staff
and so on.

Some additional funding for travel and development will be available
to the intern.

Requirements: This internship is suitable for applicants with a
recognised conservation qualification and a particular interest in
the conservation of photographic collections. Experience of book
conservation is not essential but would be helpful, since many of
the Library's photographs are in bound volumes. Applicants must be
highly motivated, reliable and resourceful, with good inter-personal
skills.
