Durham University's Special Collections, based at Palace Green
Library in the heart of the Durham World Heritage Site, administers
exceptionally rich and varied collections, medieval to modern,
including manuscripts, archives, books, maps, prints, and
photographs.  The Library has newly created exhibition galleries and
hosts both in-house exhibitions from its own collections as well as
travelling exhibitions and loans from other institutions, most
notably the Lindisfarne Gospels in 2013.

The Conservation Unit is based in a new conservation studio and
staff undertake a wide range of work, including the conservation of
paper, parchment, books, maps, condition reporting for exhibitions,
mountmaking, and installing exhibitions.  The Unit is also
responsible for collection care including environmental monitoring
of the whole range of Heritage Collections material which includes
museum objects as well as documents and rare books.  It will also be
developing a programme of outreach sessions.

This is a full-time Grade 6 post, available on a permanent basis.

Requirements:

    The Conservator will work as part of a small team under the
    direction of the Head of Conservation, deputising for the Head
    when appropriate.  Applicants should be accredited archive
    conservators or in the process of applying for accreditation,
    and experienced in both paper and book conservation and
    collections care.

    The successful applicant will be self-motivated and able to take
    responsibility.  They will be keen to keep up-to-date with new
    techniques and developments in the field of conservation and
    able to instigate new working methods and techniques into the
    department where required.  They should be enthusiastic and
    committed with the ability to adapt skills to a variety of work
    and should be prepared to work outside normal working hours when
    required.  Experience of supervising trainees would be useful.
