Subject: Mass digitisation of degrading cellulose acetate collections
The State Library of NSW is undertaking a mass digitisation program and one of the collections to be digitised contains a large number (over 200,000) of cellulose acetate negatives, many with mild to medium vinegar syndrome. The collection is now in frozen storage. I would like to hear from others with experience in digitising degrading cellulose acetate material, in particular about what equipment you chose for digitisation, methods to overcome health concerns from the off-gassing negatives, whether the digitisation was done in-house or through external vendors, and any other advice would be appreciated.
