Splitting paper by laser

Has anyone heard about a technique consisting in splitting a paper
in two layers by a laser beam? A collector customer of mine says
that he had heard someone did it in France, in order to obtain two
sheets of paper from original drawings that have image on both
sides.

I know about the technique used in wooden pulp paper, consisting in
lining both sides and then splitting mechanically, but the above
mentioned method is different because it is done in a thicker and
better paper.
