Compensation: $26,500-31,400; full benefits

The Conservation Technician is part of the Preservation Unit for the
University Libraries, Texas A&M University and reports to the
Director of Preservation.  The position works closely with the
Conservator to align preservation activities for physical
collections and actively engages with the other divisions of the
Preservation unit as well as other units within the Libraries to
create a team environment.  The primary responsibility is performing
a broad range of preservation repair on circulating library
material.  This position has room to grow as the division grows.
The Libraries is currently planning a large renovation which
includes the building of Conservation lab and new Preservation Unit
suite of offices.

Responsibilities will include:

   Perform repair on circulating library material including: tear
   repair, hinge and case tightening, headcap repair, new cases,
   cloth re-back, and other repairs as needed

   Assess and recommend library materials for appropriate
   preservation services

   Construct boxes, wrappers, and other protective enclosures

   Ensure continuity of workflow of general collections materials
   though day-to-day preservation activities

   Complete deadline-driven projects

   Maintain lab equipment in working order and follows all lab
   safety procedures

   Maintain inventory and ordering of supplies; performs preparation
   of adhesives and pre-cut materials for book repair

   Assist in training and managing student workers to perform book
   repair and make enclosures Perform other related duties as
   assigned

Qualifications:

    Candidates should have a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent

    Knowledge of basic book handling practices

    Excellent manual dexterity and attention to detail

    Effective time management skills

    Physical ability to move books and materials weighing up to 40
    pounds

    Work both independently and as part of a team

    Ability to work in an environment in which exposure to dust,
    dirt and mold is possible

    Demonstrated technology skills, including a proficiency with the

    Microsoft Office suite of word processing, spreadsheet and
    database applications

Preferred:

    Experience making books and bookbinding

    Experience performing repairs on library materials

    Experience in an academic research library conservation program

    Demonstrated sensitivity to the handling of fragile and/or rare
    materials
