Marks in books

I Am interested in the marks left by objects in books (ca.
1500-1700)--typically, the rust of scissors or spectacles that once
rested in closed books; the remains of a pressed flower; and so on.
I'm trying to think about how to interpret this kind of material,
material which seems to me to be both suggestive and unyielding. If
anyone has any striking examples of these kinds of traces that they
would be happy to share, I'd be very interested to hear about them.
If anyone has thoughts on how to respond to such material traces,
from the conservation perspective, that would be great, too.

Associate Professor of English, and the History of the Book
