Subject: Mounting items in vertical display
One of my student assistants obviously has an eye for conservation as she studies for her history degree. During her recent travels and a stop at a rest area, she observed many historic artifacts displayed by the Delaware State Historic Preservation Office. She was appalled to see that many 18th and 19th-century artifacts had been mounted with what appears to be hot-melt glue and it had failed for some items. She asked me for a recommendation and I suggested a support that would avoid any adhesive in direct contact with the items. Since we have no experience in mounting historic artifacts for such a display, I suggested that I would write to the Conservation DistList for advice. Is there a safe, yet inexpensive way to mount artifacts, such as marbles or coins, in a vertical display?
