Archive Conservator Reading Prison Berkshire Record Office RG4 (SCP 22-28) UKP20,253 - UKP24,472 pa Qualified applicants will be appointed to SCP22; accredited conservators will be appointed to SCP26 Fixed-term contract for 9 Months Full-time, 37 hours per week Ref CSS0089 Ref CSS0089 Berkshire Record Office is looking for a qualified book or paper conservator to undertake treatments to the archive of Reading Prison. Work will include book and paper repair as well as cleaning and packaging. Reading Prison is one of the most iconic buildings in English literature. It was there that Oscar Wilde spent most of his sentence for 'gross indecency', and about which he was later inspired to write "The Ballad of Reading Gaol". The current jail was built in 1844 and closed at the end of 2013. The archive spans from the Georgian period to the 21st century. Items to be repaired include some from Wilde's period, as well as others relating to the internment of Irish patriots after the Easter Rising. Amongst other things, its contents allow researchers to explore health and wellbeing within a custodial environment.
