Berkshire Record Office is looking for a qualified book or paper
conservator to undertake treatments to the archive of Reading
Prison. Work will include book and paper repair as well as cleaning
and packaging.

Reading Prison is one of the most iconic buildings in English
literature. It was there that Oscar Wilde spent most of his
sentence for 'gross indecency', and about which he was later
inspired to write "The Ballad of Reading Gaol". The current jail
was built in 1844 and closed at the end of 2013.

The archive spans from the Georgian period to the 21st century.
Items to be repaired include some from Wilde's period, as well as
others relating to the internment of Irish patriots after the Easter
Rising. Amongst other things, its contents allow researchers to
explore health and wellbeing within a custodial environment.

The post has been funded by The Wellcome Trust's Research Resources
in Medical History scheme.

Newly-qualified conservators are welcome to apply.
