Fresco and Canvas Conservation and Restoration workshop Puglia, Italy June 16 -July 4, 2016 The workshop will include the practices of conservation and restoration of fresco, canvas and statuary (wood, papier-mache, etc.). The session will begin with an introduction, practical hands-on experience, excursions and lectures. After introductions which are common to all areas, participants may choose a specific area of focus.There are no prerequisites required to participate to this workshop.The frescoes that will be worked on and studied are part of the rupestral settlements (underground habitations) located in the Alta Murgia area.Statues and canvases are provided by local churches and private collections.The session provides a practical focus, allowing students ample opportunity for participation in restoration technique and creation ex-novo. By learning and actively working, participants also contribute to the conservation of the rich art and historical heritage of the region. The workshop is complimented by seminars in Art History, Geomorphological Studies and Religious Iconography and Rituals. The courses also include several site visits, including visits to Sassi of Matera (Unesco World Heritage site), the Rupestral Churches Park, museums and art exhibitions. Maximum number of participants: 14 Site Preservation workshop Fornello Sustainable Preservation Project Puglia, Italy July 11-22, 2016 Fornello is a site made up of a Byzantine fresco cave, 12 additional cave dwellings and evidence of a settlement dating to the 3rd century B.C. The future goal for the site of Fornello is to create a sustainable conservation model through the complete restoration of the historical landscape and the frescoes, highlighting the importance of the site by converging interests, energies and actions toward the preservation of the original settlement as well as promoting sustainable living practices. Also, the project aims to support and promote the local agro-pastoral community, the history and the heritage of the local food culture practices, strongly bound to the geomorphological characteristics and climate of the region. Participants will work hands-on to stabilize cave entrances and skylights, learn the art of dry-stone-wall techniques to reconstruct the site's stone walls. They will be introduced to the practices of fresco restoration and the history of Byzantine frescoes. During the work session participants will be given instruction on archeological methods, techniques and documentation while operating in an historical site.No prerequisites are required to attend.Time at Fornello will be scheduled in half days (4 hours), alternately with lectures, guided visits to historical towns and sites, and insights on the traditional culinary culture for the other half of the days. Maximum number of participants: 14 Decorative Art and Canvas Restoration, gilding and Frame making Chateau de Gudanes Ariege, France July 29 - August 7, 2016 This 10 day workshop aims to immerse participants in the conservation of cultural heritage encompassing decorative arts, canvas restoration, frame making and gilding.This will be the 2nd year to integrate a hands-on learning workshop as part of the ongoing heritage conservation projects at Chateau de Gudanes. No prerequisites are required to attend. This workshop is an open learning workshop under the tutelage of Italian art restorer and Messors founder and director Tonio Creanza, British Fine Art restorer Tim Everett and Chateau owner Karina Waters. The 18th century Chateau de Gudanes will act as our living school of decorative arts history where layers of motifs of past decades and ownership are still present. Its rooms that once welcomed French nobility, philosophers and playwright Voltaire.Chateau de Gudanes is located an hour and half from Toulouse in the secluded South of France. Nestled in the lush green heart of the French Pyrenees mountains, the Chateau looks on to dramatic rock faces and lush terraced hills of the Ariege region. Built in the mid 1700's, the Class 1 monument was designed by prominent Parisian architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel who is most notably known for his neoclassical, architectural symmetry including, Petit Trianon at Versailles, L'Opera at Chateau Versailles, Place de la Concorde and Hotel de Crillon in Paris.Participants will be introduced to the theories, approach and methods of heritage conservation and restoration: interior decorative art and canvas restoration, frame making and gilding. Participants will work hands on in the early stages of the Chateaus ongoing restoration and discovery.
