The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the world's finest museums,
seeks an Associate Research Scientist in the Department of
Scientific Research.  The Department of Scientific Research (DSR)
have established a pilot program, the Network Initiative for
Conservation Science (NICS) that will advance research and
scholarship in art history, archaeology, conservation, and science
by sharing the Museum's scientific instrumentation, expertise, and
resources with a core group of partner institutions.  The program
will create a network among New York-area museums, most of which do
not currently have widespread access to a state-of-the-art
scientific research facility and host, for a period of six years, an
Associate Research Scientist and a Research Associate dedicated to
supporting the scientific needs of other NY area institutions.  The
Associate Scientist carries out analyses of works of art and
conducts research in support of art historical and conservation
studies.  He/She uses the full scope of equipment available at the
DSR, either directly or in collaboration with other DSR scientists
to identify component materials of works of art and their alteration
and degradation products.  He/she contributes to provenance,
authenticity, and conservation studies working in collaboration with
conservators, curators, and other members of the DSR and the NICS
partners.  He/She supervises a Research Associate.

This full-time position has an end date of February 28, 2022.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

    Administers all aspects of NICS program in collaboration with
    Scientist in Charge and other staff as appropriate: this
    includes evaluation of proposals, planning of research projects,
    interaction with NICS partners, and planning of outreach
    activities such as workshops and symposia

    Schedules and conducts analyses by techniques such as XRF, SEM,
    GCMS, Raman, FTIR, and others as appropriate, to investigate
    works of art in collaboration with NICS partners

    Communicates with partners to discuss progress of
    investigations, writes interim and final reports, and plans
    submission for publication of work of high scientific relevance

    Supervises Research Associate ensuring appropriate scientific
    mentoring and career development

    Plans yearly meetings of NICS partners and yearly evaluation
    session, including a public symposium highlighting significant
    work conducted during the year

    Other related duties

Requirements and Qualifications:

Experience and Skills:

    Experience in the scientific examination of works of art or in
    conservation research

    Demonstrated experience in FTIR, Raman, XRF, GCMS, and Optical
    Microscopy (required)

    Knowledge of SEM, HPLC, XRD (preferred)

    Ability to write scientific reports and to communicate findings
    to non specialists

    Ability to write manuscripts for peer reviewed publication in
    the scientific field.

Knowledge and Education:

    PhD in the chemistry, materials science, applied physics, or
    related disciplines (required)

    5 to 7 years of research experience as a scientist with 3 to 5
    years experience in an art museum required
