The Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the world's finest museums,
seeks a Research Associate in the Scientific Research Department at
The Metropolitan Museum of Art.  The Department of Scientific
Research (DSR) have established a pilot program, the Network
Initiative for Conservation Science (NICS) that will advance
research and scholarship in art history, archaeology, conservation,
and science by sharing the Museum's scientific instrumentation,
expertise, and resources with a core group of partner institutions.
The program will create a network among New York-area museums, most
of which do not currently have widespread access to a
state-of-the-art scientific research facility and host, for a period
of six years, an Associate Research Scientist and a Research
Associate dedicated to supporting the scientific needs of other NY
area institutions.

The Research Associate is a postdoctoral level scientist who
conducts research in support of art historical and conservation
studies under the supervision of the Associate Research Scientist.

This full-time position has an end date of February 28, 2020.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

    Collaborates with Scientist in Charge and Assistant Research
    Scientist to plan NICS research work

    Conducts analyses by techniques such as XRF, SEM, GCMS, Raman,
    FTIR, and others as appropriate, to investigate works of art in
    collaboration with NICS partners

    Communicates with partners to discuss progress of
    investigations, contributes to writing interim and final reports

    Assists Associate Research Scientist in planning yearly meetings
    of NICS partners and yearly evaluation session, including a
    public symposium highlighting significant work conducted during
    the year

    Other related duties

Requirements and Qualifications:

Experience and Skills:

    Experience in the scientific examination of works of art or in
    conservation research (preferred)

    Demonstrated experience in FTIR, Raman, XRF (required)

    Knowledge of SEM, HPLC, XRD, GCMS (preferred)

    Ability to write scientific reports and to communicate findings
    to non specialists

    Ability to write manuscripts for peer reviewed publication in
    the scientific field.

Knowledge and Education:

    PhD in the chemistry, materials science, applied physics, or
    related disciplines (required)

    1-3 Years of previous experience as a scientist in an art museum
    (preferred)
