Norman Lewis

We are examining a large Abstract Expressionist painting by Norman
Lewis from 1968.  Although it is described as oil on linen we have
found the colors to be readily soluble in water (the white
background in particular).  Does anyone know of any published
technical research on this artist or have any first hand knowledge
of his materials and methods they would be willing to share?
