Workshop and Evening Lecture on Parchment Corpus Christi College Cambridge, UK 22-24 March 2016 The Icon Book and Paper Group Co-operative Training Register is delighted to present its next training opportunity, showcasing current conservation, preservation and scientific research on historic parchment, generously hosted by Corpus Christi College Cambridge and supported by the Claire Hampson Trust. Beginning with a two-day knowledge based workshop for twenty five participants, contributors from the fields of heritage science and conservation will share their expertise through lectures, practical demonstrations, and discussions in which participants are invited to play an active role. At the end of the first day there will be an evening lecture by Jiri Vnoucek open to a larger audience. The third day will consist of a practical workshop, open to six participants. Theresa has worked internationally as a conservator in Malta, the UK, Italy, Switzerland and Egypt. She is currently Head of Preservation at the Notarial Archives in Valletta, Malta. Theresa is the author of a number of publications on book and paper conservation and is an accredited member of the Institute of Conservation. Dr David Mills completed a PhD in Laser-materials interactions in 2006 and since then has been working on new ways to understand and apply new non-invasive imaging and analysis techniques to the analysis of a wide variety of materials including paper and parchment. Angelica Bartoletti is a conservation scientist and PhD student at UCL. Her research interests include the evaluation of the impact of traditional and innovative conservation treatment for cellulose-based and collagen-based artefacts. She also researches the application of innovative tools in the field of Cultural Heritage Science for the characterisation of materials and their degradation behaviours at the nanoscale. Jiri Vnoucek studied with Christopher Clarkson at West Dean College, Sussex. He undertook an MA in Conservation Science at the School of Conservation of the Royal Academy in Copenhagen and has participated on the IDAP EU project and other projects in the field of conservation of parchment manuscripts. His current research is focused on the "Visual assessment of parchment in medieval manuscripts", which forms part of his PhD at the University of York. Fiona Brock is a lecturer in applied analytical techniques at Cranfield Forensic Institute. Fiona's degree, PhD, and subsequent research were in chemistry and biogeochemistry, before she joined the Research Laboratory for Archaeology at Oxford University as the radiocarbon dating laboratory chemist in 2005. For 10 years Fiona was involved in developing and applying methods for dating a wide range of materials, including parchments. Edward Cheese is an accredited conservator of rare books and manuscripts. He trained at West Dean College in Sussex, during which time he was awarded a Queen Elizabeth Craft Scholarship. He worked at the Cambridge Colleges' Conservation Consortium for eight years, the last three as Conservation Manager, before moving to the Fitzwilliam Museum in 2015 to take up the post of Conservator of Manuscripts and Rare Books (Assistant Keeper). He is particularly interested in the history of bookbinding and the conservation of medieval manuscript and early printed book bindings. Lara Artemis has been an accredited book and paper conservator since 2003. She is currently the Collections Care Manager responsible for library and archive collections held at the Houses of Parliament, UK. She initially developed her specialist interest in parchment conservation at The National Archives, where she worked as a manuscript conservator between 1994 and 1998. She held positions at the British Library and at the Wellcome Trust, before joining her present position. Lara was an Institute of Conservation trustee for three years (2011-2014) and is presently an editorial panel member for the Journal of the Institute of Conservation. She initiated the 20th Anniversary Vellum and Parchment edition of 2012. Mariluz Beltran de Guevara has been an accredited book and paper conservator since 2008 and is a specialist in the conservation of parchment. She graduated from Camberwell College of Arts in 1996 and gained a Postgraduate Diploma in the Conservation of Rare Books and Manuscripts from West Dean College, Sussex University in 1997. Following an internship at the Victoria and Albert Museum she worked at the Dundee University Conservation Unit before joining the British Library in 2001, where she currently holds the post of Collection Care Monitoring Conservator. During her many years at the British Library, Mariluz has held the post of Parchment and Vellum Specialist (2007-2010) and Conservation Team Leader (2003-2007; 2010-2015).
