I have used Zorbix for humidification and flattening of paper very
successfully--a great alternative to capillary matting.

I did have an occasion to use my Zorbix sheets for their intended
purpose when I spilled the contents of my large cardboard tank of
water on my home studio floor. While very absorbent I found the
sheets were just not large enough (and/or I did not have enough of
them) and got out towels and cotton batting for quilting to absorb
all the water off my wood floor! For smaller scale water emergencies
these could be very handy. I have not yet exhausted my sheets so
don't know what the life span is at this point. I keep my sheets
sealed in their ziplocked packaging. I find they dry a little
wonky, but as I re-moisten them for humidification it doesn't
matter.
