Project Conservator Queen's House

This is a fixed term contract of 4 months duration.  Core hours of
work will be 41 per week, 9am - 5pm, Monday to Friday, with an
additional hour to be worked as agreed upon with management.

Reporting to: Senior Organic Conservator

This is an exciting opportunity to get involved in a unique project
working on a masterpiece of seventeenth-century architecture set
within a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Upon reopening the Queen's
House will showcase part of Royal Museums Greenwich extensive
collection of art as well as other objects from its varied
collection, all set amongst splendid architecture.

In 2016, the Museum will be celebrating the 400th Anniversary of the
Queen's House.  Designed by Inigo Jones for James I's queen, Anne of
Denmark, it is the first classical buildings in the country and an
acknowledged masterpiece of seventeenth-century architecture.  In
preparation for this key milestone the National Maritime Museum is
embarking on a major refurbishment and re-display of the House.
This fixed term contract is to provide conservation support to the
project.

The primary responsibility for the post holder will be to support
the conservation of the King's Presence Chamber and other
conservation projects within the Queen's House.  This could involve
elements of frame conservation, object cleaning, documentation,
light management and environmental monitoring.

Duties and Responsibilities:

    Support the conservation of the King's Presence Chamber

    Support the conservation including basic cleaning of other
    interior elements considered of significant importance

    Support the Queen's House team with routine collections care
    duties of objects on open display in other parts of the museum
    including light management

    Carry out structural treatment to weak or damaged frames,
    including fitting build-ups, backboards, slips and glazing

    Make bespoke display solutions to predominantly but not
    exclusively organic based objects

    Undertake conservation treatment of the Museum's organic-based
    collections, within agreed work plans.  Conservation treatment
    includes dry and chemical cleaning, removal of old repairs,
    effecting new repairs, infilling and colour matching of missing
    areas as required

    Undertake all treatments in line with Conservation Standards and
    code of ethics, using appropriate materials and appropriate
    techniques

    Ensure that all assessments and treatments are recorded using
    the Museum's electronic database system MIMSY XG and
    photographic equipment

    Work efficiently within a team to ensure projects are completed
    within a given time frame

    Assist with the maintenance of the wood machining workshop
    including ensuring the workshop and machinery comply with all
    health and safety legislation applicable to this area

    Be aware of Health and Safety policy/Risk assessment and COSSH
    implications in particular when working with chemicals and
    machinery in the Studios and machine rooms

Skills, Knowledge and Experience:

Essential:

    A recognised professional qualification in Furniture or Frame
    Conservation

    Demonstrable experience of using woodworking machinery as well
    as specialised hand tools

    Experience of working with painted and gilded surfaces

    Awareness of COSHH and Health and Safety issues at the work
    place

    Experience of environmental monitoring and preventive
    conservation

    Willingness to learn from and work alongside experienced
    conservators

    Good organisational skills, ability to plan and prioritise work

    Good computer skills

    Able to effectively communicate orally and in writing

Desirable:

    Experience of working in a museum environment

Other: This is a major refurbishment project and the majority of the
work will be carried out on-site in the Queens House which will be
physically demanding.  The successful applicant will need to be:

    Able to work at heights (ladders and scaffolding)
    Able to lift weights up to 20-25kg

Salary: UKP21,000-UKP26,000 per annum
