Artist Interview Workshops
Voices in Contemporary Art (VoCA)

VoCA's Artist Interview Workshops aim to educate conservators,
curators, educators, and their colleagues on the methodology and
skills required to conduct successful artist interviews and gather
knowledge essential to art preservation. In 2016, the dates and
locations for the workshops will be as follows:

   April 14-15, 2016
   Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

   June 16-17, 2016
   Denver Art Museum

The application for both programs is now available online at

    <URL:http://www.voca.network/artist-interview-workshop-application/>

The deadline to apply is March 1, 2016.

As artists have increasingly experimented with an unprecedented
range of new materials and technologies--often with untested
longevity and built-in obsolescence leading to
instability--interviews with artists, studio assistants, and estates
have become a critical tool in preserving contemporary art for
future generations. Educating our colleagues on the methods and
best practice for interviewing is a crucial component of this
process. The Artist Interview Workshops thus comprise two-day
meetings during which various presenters conduct a series of
lectures and case studies which are then analysed via roundtable
discussion and tested in small group exercises. Speakers also
facilitate conversations with other presenters and attendees,
addressing their own experiences with interviewing artists, the
different approaches interviewers can take, and common challenges in
the process. Topics covered can range from legal and ethical
concerns to oral history, archiving methods, and applicable
technology.

The workshops will be led by Gwynne Ryan, Chief Conservator at the
Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and oral historians Richard
Candida Smith, Jess Rigelhaupt, and Sam Redman. Key speakers will
include Chad Alligood, Curator at Crystal Bridges Museum of American
Art; Lauren Guttenplan, Associate General Counsel at the Smithsonian
Institution; James McElhinney, Artist and Oral Historian; Kate
Lewis, Media Conservator at the Museum of Modern Art; Sarah
Melching, Director of Conservation at the Denver Art Museum; Kate
Moomaw, Associate Conservator for Modern and Contemporary Art at the
Denver Art Museum; and Anne Reeve, Curator at Glenstone.

These Workshops have been made possible by the continued support of
the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, whose generosity has enabled us to
offer this program tuition free. However, please be aware that
participants are responsible for their own cost of travel, some
meals, and hotel accommodations. Also, each workshop is limited to
25 participants, so we recommend that you do not wait to apply.
Applicants accepted to the Boston workshop will be notified by March
15, and successful applicants for the Denver workshop will be
notified by April 11, 2016.

We look forward to receiving your application and having you become
a part of the ever-growing VoCA network.
