Subject: Call for applications--CXD Nicholas Hadgraft Scholarship
Call for applications Nicholas Hadgraft Memorial Scholarship "Re-creating the Medieval Palette", "The Unicorn Binder", "An al-Andalusian Islamic Binding", and "Carolingian Binding" are the topics on offer to the winner of this year's Nicholas Hadgraft Memorial Scholarship, thanks to Conservation By Design Limited (CXD). For the 12th consecutive year, CXD is inviting conservators and skilled bookbinders to apply for the renowned scholarship. The winner will receive UKP1,500 towards the cost of attending the Montefiascone Book Conservation Summer School, a unique bookbinding course held each year in the beautiful medieval town of Montefiascone, Italy. Running from the heart of the medieval town throughout the month of August, 2016 each week the summer school features a different specialised course and tutor, which this year includes Cheryl Porter, Kristine Rose Beers, Jim Bloxham, Shaun Thompson, Ana Beny, Alison Ohta and Michael Burke. Conservation By Design's Managing Director, Dirk Hendrickx, said: "The Montefiascone summer school is unique and the reactions we get from students are very positive. Professors and students share knowledge and their love of precious bookbinding. It is not surprising that, every year we see more and more interest. The school attracts a breadth of international applicants, offering a great environment for exchanging and learning specialist skills. Every year, the panel is impressed by the quality of applications and I would urge anyone interested to get their application form in as soon as possible and I wish all applicants the best of luck." Xiaoping Cai, a full-time MA student at the University of the Arts London, was the lucky recipient of the 2015 scholarship. Xiaoping used the scholarship to attend all four of last year's courses--"Recreating the Medieval Palette", "Italian Stiff-Board Vellum Binding with Slotted Spine", "The Rylands Fountainebleau Aldine" and an early Islamic Binding course. She commented: "The tutors are internationally recognized experts and have great knowledge of the most popular debates and the most advanced research in this profession. They offered courses based on research projects of their own institutions, and the contents were well organized. Working with a group of other international attendees, I got the opportunity to share experiences and exchange ideas with them, but also to know about the development of the conservation profession in different countries. I have learnt a lot of skills and techniques which are very important for my professional development. "The Summer School also offered a unique opportunity to establish friendship for the future, which I would never find anywhere else. I am really grateful to CXD for the scholarship; it allowed me to have a wonderful journey." The scholarship is offered in memory of Dr Nicholas Hadgraft, a good friend of Conservation By Design who died tragically in 2004. Nicholas was a fellow of the University of the Arts London and a key collaborator on the "Squelch Drying" technique devised by Stuart Welch (the founder of CXD), the most effective way to date of drying valuable rare books. Application forms are now available from the CXD website <URL:http://www.conservation-by-design.co.uk> Completed applications must be received by 6 April 2016 and the successful applicant will be notified in by end of April 2016.
