Subject: Internship at Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden
Internship Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden Each year the Conservation Department at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden implements a maintenance program for its outdoor sculpture collection. For the 2016 season, the Museum is offering conservation internships spanning twelve weeks between May and August. These positions come with a modest stipend. The Sculpture Conservation Internship is designed for candidates in the pre-program phase of their conservation careers. The participants will receive hands-on introduction in outdoor sculpture conservation and maintenance and will assist in conducting gallery inspections and monitoring environmental conditions in the collection spaces. Scope of maintenance program: The Hirshhorn has more than sixty sculptures situated throughout its sculpture garden and plaza that are made from a variety of materials, including stone, glass, bronze, iron, aluminum, and steel. The artworks receive annual maintenance conservation treatments that may include detergent washing and the application of protective surface coatings; occasionally there is a need for treatments that require a greater degree of intervention. This work can be strenuous and is performed mostly outdoors in hot and humid conditions. Application Process: Applications must be completed online at <URL:https://solaa.si.edu> no later than Friday, February 19, 2016. Any questions about the internship should be directed to Gwynne Ryan at ryangw<-at->si<.>edu. For more information about the Museum's collection, please visit the collection page at Hirshhorn.si.edu.
