    conference
"2016: A Changing Art: Nineteenth-Century Painting: Practice and
    Conservation"
London
Friday 7 October 2016

Deadline for abstract submissions: 29 February 2016

The BAPCR (British Association of Paintings Conservator-Restorers)
is pleased to announce the call for papers for their forthcoming
conference in October 2016: A Changing Art: Nineteenth-Century
Painting Practice and Conservation, Friday 7 October 2016, the
Wallace Collection, London

The nineteenth century was a remarkable period for art and painting
practice, and conservators of paintings produced at that time are
often presented with particular challenges. Great social and
political change throughout Europe caused artists to depict new
subject matter and overturn traditional rules and conventions. Art
movements as diverse as Neoclassicism and Impressionism developed
throughout the century and painting as a practice was itself
challenged and informed by the dawn of photography. Advancements in
material technology led to the widening accessibility and commercial
production of painting materials. The resulting choices and
innovations in materials and techniques, and wide range of artists'
intention, all have an impact on the deterioration, presentation and
conservation of nineteenth-century paintings. The conference will
provide an opportunity to share and discuss these considerations in
the context of current research and experience.

Abstracts are invited for papers covering all aspects of painting
conservation practice, study and research in relation to
nineteenth-century paintings. It is envisaged that a series of 15
minute talks will supplement longer 30 minute papers, to provide
opportunities to present short case studies of treatments for
example. Submissions for both formats are therefore encouraged.

Themes and subject matter could include (but are not limited to):

    The conservation of nineteenth-century paintings

Practical solutions, conservation research and innovative
    solutions to specific treatment problems

Technical research into materials and techniques and the
    significance of this for conservators

    Understanding artistic practice and intention

Presentation, varnishing and display of nineteenth-century
    paintings

    Conservation in the nineteenth century

Deterioration of paintings produced in the nineteenth century

Surveys of technical research and contextual research

Please submit abstracts of 400 words or less, for consideration by
the Peer Review Panel,

by 29 February 2016 to:

    Gemma Collins
    BAPCR secretary
    bapcrsecretary<-at->gmail<.>com

Please specify the intended talk length (either 15 or 30 minutes).
Include the title, author's name(s), professional titles,
affiliations, and an author biography of no more than 250 words. In
the case of multiple authors please list all authors and include an
email address for each, indicating corresponding author. Only one
submission by the same primary author will be considered. Please
note that the BAPCR will publish postprints of submitted papers and
speakers will be asked to submit their proofs by November 2016.
