Commissioned Treatment Supervisor Hampton Court Palace Three year contract: April 2016 - March 2019 Historic Royal Palaces (HRP) is the independent charity that looks after the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, the Banqueting House, Kensington Palace, Kew Palace and Hillsborough Castle in Northern Ireland. Across these six sites we care for thousands of historic objects, many of them in their original royal setting. You'll have a real interest in our history, in the buildings and their contents and be willing to help everyone explore how monarchs and people have shaped society in some of the greatest palaces ever built Reporting to our Manager of Treatment Conservation, you will plan, commission and oversee the conservation treatments on our non-textile collections; both the movable objects and the decorative fixtures and fittings which range from wall and ceiling paintings to garden statuary to furnishings and decorative arts. This role ensures that these mixed collections are conserved and preserved to exemplary conservation standard. You will manage a wide range of contracted conservation projects, often leading teams of specialist staff and external consultants in their successful delivery. Managing a small staff team of conservators who care passionately about the preservation of our palaces and their collections, you will be responsible for conducting treatment need surveys on the collections using external specialists and from this you will help develop our long-term plans to prioritise and budget the conservation treatment across the collections, with your conservation colleagues who are responsible for studio based textile treatments. Your work to conserve the collections within the public rooms of our palaces makes you our liaison to stakeholders such as Historic England and the palace Operations, Curatorial, Surveying and Health and Safety teams to agree the approach to conserving and enable implementation of the on-site works. Being passionate about and taking responsibility for explaining and profiling our conservation work internally and externally is an important part of the job of every conservator at Historic Royal Palaces. Your degree in conservation, together with substantial relevant practical hands-on treatment experience and excellent technical credentials including a good knowledge of conservation policy and contract management and comprehensive project management skills and experience, will ensure that you are able to deliver complex projects to standard and on schedule. You will also need a sound grasp of Microsoft Word, Excel and (preferred but not essential), Microsoft Project. Based at Hampton Court Palace, you may be required to work at our other sites and must be comfortable working at heights.
