Conservator: Organics Conservation and Scientific Research British Museum Full time Fixed Term: 15 months in duration UKP24,872 per annum pro-rata Application Deadline: The British Museum's Conservation and Scientific Research department are seeking a Specialist Conservator: Organics to assist with the conservation of the collection of organic artefacts and to contribute to the care of the collections programme. The post-holder will work on the assessment, preparation and treatment of objects from the Africa, Oceania and Americas department for the relocation from off-site storage in North and West London to new facilities within the World Conservation and Exhibition Centre (WCEC) in Bloomsbury. Key areas of responsibility: To collaborate with and to advise curatorial and collection services staff on the WCEC collection move and on best practice in storage. To independently carry out all aspects of practical conservation on a wide range of organic objects, in particular organic objects, for transport to and storage in the new WCEC. This includes the ability to evaluate different options for an objects' treatment and the suitability of an object for transport and storage. To maintain accurate records of all work undertaken and enter the data into the Museum's computerised record system. To maintain and develop knowledge of new conservation materials and techniques through the conservation literature, training and other professional development activities. Person Specification: The ideal candidate will possess a recognised professional qualification in the conservation of archaeological, historic or contemporary organic materials and will have post-training experience in the museum sector, working with a range of objects made from organic materials. You will be able to demonstrate understanding of conservation theory and ethical decision making, will be IT literate and will have an understanding of health and safety issues. With excellent communication, organisational and decision making skills, you will work well within a team as well as independently. The post-holder will need to pass a colour vision test.
